Place-based Skills for Climate Mitigation and Adaptation

Join us for a panel discussion on Place-based Skills for Climate Mitigation and Adaptation, in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). This in-person panel will explore how localised engineering practices can address the challenges of climate change by creating sustainable, adaptable, and resilient communities. Our panellists will showcase successful examples of place-based skilling for climate mitigation and adaptation, including case studies from the UK and globally. 

Place-based climate action includes policies targeted or tailored to the circumstances of different places. Programmes can work with local markets, leverage the funding and powers of sub-national governments and mobilise local communities to deliver lasting change. Our panel will examine the importance of reskilling and upskilling in specific sectors, which are critical enablers for communities to meet evolving climate-related demands. The event will highlight best practices for creating pathways to skilled communities, as well as the role of supporting infrastructure and materials.

Key themes include the engineering challenges posed by climate change and the development of innovative solutions, ranging from adaptive technologies to community-driven approaches that prioritise local insights and sustainability. Understanding place-based design principles that leverage local knowledge and materials while addressing specific environmental risks is key. Systems thinking requires collaboration among engineers, planners, policymakers, and community members, as well as innovation and adaptation through emerging technologies and adaptive infrastructure to tackle climate-driven challenges. The event aims to highlight best practice examples, encourage cross-border collaboration, and advance place-based approaches to build sustainable and resilient communities worldwide.
